Baking a perfect loaf each time is no easy task, but don’t worry, we’ve had a lot of practice...
To get started, we bring together all of the right ingredients (including our own Kingsmill flour), in just the right amounts to make the perfect Kingsmill loaf. We mix and knead them all together until they make a smooth and silky dough.
Kneading the dough during the mixing process is one of the most important steps in creating the lovely soft texture that you know and love in Kingsmill bread.
We then split the dough into evenly-sized pieces for our loaves. Each piece is shaped then placed into a tin and left to rise in a process known as ‘proving’. Before long, the dough has risen to the top of the tin, and it’s ready for baking.
Leaving the dough in a warm, humid place lets the yeast get to work. CO2 bubbles are produced, which makes the dough grow in size.
Once it has reached the right size, it is time to go into in the oven. Now we wait! We know it’s ready once the crust is golden brown and the loaf is baked through, around 20-30 minutes later.
After cooling, the loaf is cut into either medium, thick, or our even thicker Super Toasty slices. The loaf is then wrapped in our distinctive golden yellow, and sealed with a tag to keep it fresh.
We let our bread cool after it is baked, because if it is too warm it won’t slice properly as it is far too soft!
We then send our freshly baked, squeezably soft loaves on their final journey to a store near you, making sure that wherever you are you in the UK you can enjoy Kingsmill bread, every day of the year.
